Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks (or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon)
  • 4 vanilla beans, split and scraped (or 4 teaspoons vanilla extract)
  • 2 star anises (optional)
  • 4 teaspoons loose-leaf black tea or 4 black tea bags (optional)
  • Sweetener of choice (honey, sugar, or sugar substitute)

Instructions

  1. Boil water in a small pot.
  2. Add cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans to the pot; turn off heat and cover. If using star anise, add now. If using vanilla extract and ground cinnamon, add them directly.
  3. Steep for about 10 minutes.
  4. If desired, add black tea and brew for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  5. Heat milk in a separate pot until warm but not boiling.
  6. Strain the tea infusion into the warmed milk.
  7. Stir in your chosen sweetener to taste.
  8. Serve hot or cool before serving over ice.
